Dog training classes

Molly and I go puppy training every sunday afternoon.
We love it, she is well behaved and it is our time together.

josh and i went training when he was a youngster and we did kc good citizen scheme - he has his bronze and silver certificate and we worked for the gold but there was a mishap at the test and we didn't try again as i was so disapointed! now we go agility training and have great fun together

I love going to good training classes with my guys! I'm pretty picky about the classes, though. I had to go to three before I found one that I really liked here in KC. It's a clicker class and it really made a convert out of me. I'm hoping to do much more with all of my guys. As the saying goes, "Don't complain -- Train!"

I am so impressed with clicker training -its what I used with Josh as a baby and he learned so many things so quickly with so little effort!

I paid for 10 lessons for Phoebe and only went to 3 as I didn;t like it, far to many in the class and everyone started at different time and we went on the first time and we was doing sit and stay while we threw a toy.. so silly.
I wish I did find a good one near me as I think they are great for the dogs and the owners.

I was on the list for agility classes but never heard back from them.

I was impressed by how quickly ALL of the dogs in the class learned! Most of the dogs in the class were very young, and of course, pretty unruly when class started. It just amazed me to see how quickly they transformed from wild hoolighans to well-mannered pets. Another thing I really liked about the clicker training was that my instructor never used or allowed any student to use any "aversion" techniques, such as jerking on the leash. There was no touching of the dog at all, and yet, they got it! And much more quickly than in other classes I've attended.

Don't give up on classes, PhoebeMeesha! I've had to go through a lot of classes to find the one that I like. The very first class I took Kop to, I hated. Ironically, it was offered through a dog-training club. My first red flag was that nobody asked for or seemed interested in checking vaccination records. Second red flag was the number of dogs in the class -- all of them big and definitely older than the class description said. (there was only one other small dog -- an older poodle). There were about 30 dogs in the class, and while it was a large facility and there were several assistant trainers, that's just too chaotic for my tastes. The instructor would demonstrate how to do something in the center of the ring, then we were to practice doing it ourselves, and then afterwards, each of us came into the center of the ring individually to demonstrate how well we were doing. Lots of wasted time in that last step. The final straw for me was at the end of the class when all of the dogs were to be turned loose to "play" with each other. I tried to be a good sport, but Kop was just 4 months old and so much smaller, plus there was an Aussie that had decided to bowl Kop over again and again. Not very much fun for him or me, so we didn't go back.

On the other end of the spectrum is the latest class that I've gone to -- it's given me hope that even if I move, I'll be able to find a class I feel comfortable with. First, the instructor tells you the maximum number of dogs that she will have in the class (, second, she makes sure she has the owners under control and understanding and following the rules (no face-to-face introductions with other dogs, always keep your dog, especially in the first classes, at lest 3 feet away from any other dog), and even with that small number, she had a very qualified assistant so you got a lot of one-on-one.

So keep looking! Great classes truly do exist!

My Spanner has had a bad experience of traing class too, I had a brilliant one but unfortunately it closed down so after trawling the internet I finally found another that wasnt too far away, The problem is that there are lots of bigger uncontrolled dogs and very few smaller ones. They are sprawled all over the matting when the dogs are trying to do their individual work and as a consequence Spanner puts down his tail if he sees any larger dogs in the vicinity of the show ring. I have stopped taking him untill I can find another that has provission for smaller dogs and that makes owners take greater controll of their dogs. Meanwhile If Spanner shows in a single breed show he is fine otherwise he dosnt show.

Have you contacted the kennel club for lists of classes in your area?? You need really to be in a KC good citizen scheme which is more suited to our little ones as it is not quite as strict as traditional obedience - where they tend to be rougher and more forceful with the dogs! I used the lists to find both the training class and also my agility class (though I had to ask them for different lists if I remember rightly!

I did puppy training with both of mine and loved it.

Daisy did 12 weeks initially and then we returned to the next class up when she was one and did a further 12 weeks.

Daisy and myself loved it .

Our special time together and she was a very quick learner and loved to please and show off her skills.

I did 6 weeks with Hattie and then the guy who did the training had full time work commitments and had to close down I was sooooooooooo and have tried other classes in my area but did not like them.

I really would love to find a trainer as good as Kevin so I could return with both of mine but so far no luck

How do you find out where they are?

I did find one but its in the evening and I would prefer to go in the day time.

Also what age can they go from?

Kevin was reccommended.

The Kennel Club will send you a list of approved trainers if you email them.

Daisy and Hattie started as soon as they had their innoculations and it was safe for them to go out.

Thanks I will e-mail them later to find out if theres one near me. it wont be for a while yet as she's not had her injections.

You can't enquire too early as there is usually a waiting time anyway for class places!

Hi Guys I have found a puppy training class just up the road from me couldn't believe it. Its only been there 2 weeks they have moved from there last place as the building they rented was closing.

All the puppies there were quite big so Poppy will be the smallest one there (they are all 12 weeks old).

What I want to ask you all is they have told me to take some treats with me to give her when shes done what I want her to do. They have told me Cheese and hot dog sausages.

I am a bit worried about the cheese bit as I have been told only to give her goats milk. Is cheese OK

I took ordinary cheese when I went with Daisy and with Hattie also frankfurter sausages or that wafer thin ham .

They all worked really well with the training and I still take the ham out with me now just in case I need them to come to me quickly it never fails.

Good luck with the training it is a very special time spent with your dog and I am still wish I could find a training class locally.

My trainer unfortuanately had to stop due to work commitments

I can't wait to take her. The puppies were so good four German shepherds all sisters, Two Dalmatians sisters and a husky. So Poppy will be the smallest one there.

I stayed and watched the adult dogs too. They too was so good.

Its a couple that do it and the woman gave me a few thing to teach her at home and gave me lots of good tips so i will be trying these with her.
We have tried her tonight on her lead for the first time she decided to go back wards
Going to keep trying her so when she can go out she should be OK.

cant believe how near it is to me. It will only take me three minutes or so to walk up.

Awww bless her! . I bet she looks so tiny next to the other pups. I should really get Harvey to some classes, teach him some manners.

not sure how she will go on with the other puppies as they looked massive towards her. What I think I will do is once she can go out I will take her to meet my Mum and Dads dog he's a Rough Collie so if I get her use to him then they will be nothing towards him.

He's getting old now bless him hes 14 this month so know she will be fine with him.

I wouldn't worry about her with the bigger puppies - shih tzu have an uncanny knack of letting others know they rule the world!!

When JOsh was little I took him to a puppy party at my vets - I was conscious of socialising him because it was the first time I had a singleton shih tzu!! He was the only ickle puppy there and was terrorised by the gsd and rottie and collie!! I was a bit upset and on edge for him - so much so that I nearly didn't take him back! I am so glad I did because the following week he was worse than they were and led all the rough play - putting the gsd in his place good a proper lol!!!

Sarah is my trainer and she is lovely.
they also do dogy sits so if you go away they will look after your dogs in their house and not in kennels.
