Whistle training help
So I've done 3 days of stage 1 and boy does he get it lol, so tonight I'm trying stage to, but he won't look away lol he knows I have the whistle he knows I have the sausage, he follows me like a shadow so he misses nothing lol, I've blown it twice tonight so far both times when he's left the room once he was after the cat :o he comes back like a steam train
I can't get over how clever my boy is, but how do I continue? As I am or is there an easier way?
Thank you
Thank you

Re: Whistle training help
Ha Ha Ha - that was exactly what Josh did
Just keep going as you are - don't blow it when he is expecting it. I don't know if you let him go out in the garden on his own - but if you do then blow it when he is out so he can come in to you.
I don't think he is too far from being whistle trained by the sound of it

Re: Whistle training help
He does go out on his own yes, I don't like to interrupt him tho as he's usually going to pee, will try the taking him by surprise, at the minute we are only doing it when the kids have gone to bed, I shall throw in a few random ones tomorrow

Re: Whistle training help
Well done on your training next step is u going out of eye site so u know he has a good understanding and the garden to make connection to the outside but as u say u dont want to disturb him having a wee I found a big space e.g field pref on with no other dog walkers and maybe a few ppl to help just incase of escaping or running but I find if they bolt run the other way making waving and crazy sounds gets them to come back cause chasing makes a good game for them which is not good.
Random ones r good because u know pup doesn't know u have treats and is following so keep up the good work

Re: Whistle training help
Obviously you wait till he has had his pee (only the first pee is the real one with the little boys
the others are just marking territory) so once he has been - go back in and leave it a moment or two. I would not do itin the wild world just yet until you are sure he is coming to the sound of the whistle and not seeing you blow it

He did it he did it he did it!!!!!!
So so so proud of him, I tried it 3 times on our walk, didn't need to he comes when called 99% of the time but he came EVERYTIME,
my neighbours dog sort of came she hasn't been doing it as I told her and has only done it for one day then gave up
but she won't listen, still my boy is a genius
I can see how they could be addictive he's such an amazing dog, I'm guessing it's a shih tzu thing and they are all as clever and brilliant as ted as you all have more than one
lol

Congratulations to you both, but remember to keep practising so he keeps it up. It's so nice when you realise that they can do as they are told sometimes!

Re: Whistle training help
So often people give up and only do half the work and your neighbour is one of those people. You on the other hand have been brilliant and your boy is a good boy too. Josh is not food omotivated outside so I used to, and still do every now and then,n make a game of it maybe hiding behind a tree and blowing the whistle and making such a fuss of him when he comes. Shih Tzu are very clever but often they think they are too clever to do things we want them to do or maybe they do it but in their own way (and that is part if their charm too)

Do girls 'mark' their terratory too, because take Mali for instance. She has a wee when we first go on a walk and then within a couple of yards or so she's done at least a half a dozen more dribbles wee's. On the other hand it has only taken Tasha 2 1/2 years to learn to have a wee when we are out.
Re: Whistle training help
Wispa does one big wee and thats it, but Poppy is the same has lots of little wees and then will kick her back legs as if to leave a scent x

The foods worth while
We are off on a walk on our own tonight minus my friend and her disobedient collie, (the dog to be fair to him is really bright he just needs the training) it will be nice and peaceful and I'm hoping we can do a meet and great or two which we can't do with bailey as he guards teddy and snaps

Re: Whistle training help
You have taken the time to do the work so give yourself a pat on the back as well.

I agree with Sujay that you should give yourself a pat on the back for doing the work too but I would also like to thank you because you have just made my day and have made running this forum in my spare time all so very worthwhile
