New baby boy Empty New baby boy

Post by Freckles Mon Jul 29, 2013 3:21 pm

Hi everyone I have just joined! I surprised my husband with a beautiful 10 week old, gold baby boy for his Birthday. We have been at home settling Chester in, and he seems very happy to play, eat, drink, sleep, potty outside during the day and on puppy pads in the night. We have a canvas crate but dont lock him in it so he can come out to potty if needs be. We totally adore him. My concern now is that I have to return to work on Weds 9-5 and can only pop home at lunchtime. Will he be ok, any advice? My husband works away. Thanks, Fx

You need to practice leaving him or it will be a terrible shock for him on Wednesday.  Where doyou plan to leave him - you need to make sure he is safe but can have access to water?  Don't leave him with the run of the house or even kitchen as a puppy this young can get himself into terrible trouble with wires and such things also they feel more secure if the space they are in is not massive like a big room.

It is going to be a very long day for him though it is good you can at least break it up in the middle of the day.  Is there anyone nearby who can check in on him for you for a little while till he is settled into the routine?

Make sure he has plenty of safe toys to keep him occupied and perhaps a stuffed Kong to keep him entertained as well.

Lots of play and cuddles before you go to work, at lunch time and then when you get home are in order too xxxx

Thats a long time for him to be on his own, do u have any dog walkers in your area that could pop in on him, or failing that a play mate lol x

I agree it does seem an awfully long time for a puppy to be left. I know it's hard if you want to have a dog but go out to work but maybe as has been suggested you could find someone who is willing to look after him a bit in the daytime. One lady down my road has just retired and she looks after dogs while their owners are on holiday or are at work and she loves doing it and the dogs she looks after get plenty of company and socialisation too.

Welcome to you and Chester. Isn't your Hubby lucky having a birthday surprise like that . I wish mine worked away then I could surprise him with a third one. He won't let me have another one.
Has anyone told you how addictive they are. I would suggest leaving a radio on for company if no one else is able to look in on him, as has been said already it is a long time for him to be left on his own. Enjoy they are a wonderful breed.

That is really good news. They are a breed that enjoy company and don't enjoy being left for long spells. It sounds as though he will have the best of both worlds and be socialised at the same time with seeing different people.

I am really pleased you have managed to work something out and you will find yourself with a very well-balanced little boy on your hands as a result.  As people have said they are a very social little breed and thrive on human companionship.

Looking forward to sharing your news and experiences (and boy there will be plenty of those with this breed lol! ) - don't forget photos are really important here so we can all get out puppy fix - if you get stuck doing it just give a shout as there are plenty of people who can talk you through the process teddy hug
