We lost little Sophie

Post by dawnpowell999 on Fri Mar 25, 2011 9:57 pm

Dear all,
Apologies if this isn't the right place to post. Will try to keep this short as I'm so upset.
We lost little Sophie to mouth cancer today. The disease progressed at a rapid rate, until her entire lower jaw was tumour. For the past month we have been feeding her small pieces of ham etc through the side of her mouth. But yesterday she couldn't eat, and we could only syringe water into her. The discharge from her mouth was really bloody and smelly, so we made the appt for the vets today. This morning she collapsed when she tried to get out of her bed, so we wrapped a towel round her and cuddled her, and told her how much we loved her, until the vets opened. The vet was lovely, and Sophie went to sleep peacefully with my daughter, son, husband and me stroking and cradling her.
I'm devastated. We have lost both of our dogs in less than 4 months. I feel so bereft, empty.
Thank you so much for your support when Sophie received her diagnosis. I'm sorry I haven't been about much, I have been lurking but not really in the mood to post. I will pop in now and again to see how every ones doing...but it's very hard at the moment.
Lastly, please keep a really close eye on your little ones mouth. If you notice any redness, swelling, unusual smell, maybe rubbing their face on furniture or the floor...get them checked out. I had no idea that mouth cancer was so common in dogs, and especially those with dark pigment inside the mouth. I really thought Sophie just had a bit of tooth trouble again.
Take care, love to you all, gona miss you xx teddy hug

I am so very very sorry Dawn - how awful for you all. I am sending you lots of hugs and loving thoughts. I know it won't help at the moment but I do know how you feel and I know that both Sophie and Simba knew how much they were loved and how much you did for them. I know they are gone in the physical sense but I am sure they remain around you in spirit. Their love will live on and they will have truly left their pawprints on your heart. I wish I was closer so that I could give you a hug.

Please don't leave us - I know it is hard at the moment but as time eases the pain (it never goes away I know but it does ease a little) and you find yourself remembering the good times with both Simba and Sophie we would still like to hear about them and enjoy your memories too xxxx teddy hug teddy hug teddy hug

I am so sorry to hear that you lost poor little Sophie, but you knew the time was right, and you have made the bravest and hardest descision you ever have to make. You gave Sophie all the love and care that she needed and I am sure that she knew this. At the minute everything is raw and hurts so much, but gradually day by day things will get a little bit easier. You will never forget, and that is the way it should be. As fellow pet lovers we all know what you are feeling, and totally understand if you are not around for a while, but please don't leave us, I am sure we would all love to hear some stories about Sophie and Simba when you feel like talking again. Big to all of you at this sad time.

Hi everyone,

Wow...you guys are something really special... thanks

I sat down with hubby this afternoon and we looked at your messages together. I'm not ashamed to say we both shed a few tears. How kind and thoughtful you are towards people you don't even know group hug Of course many of you will have been in this position and fully understand how it feels to lose such loved pets. It's so easy to think you're the only one who feels the way that you do, and I know this will get easier with time. I realise that the hurt we feel now reflects just how much we loved Sophie and Simba Sad

I think I was frightened of coming back on the site as I thought I wouldn't be able to cope with seeing and hearing about other peoples dogs without feeling jealous/angry/sad ... gosh that sounds so selfish & ungrateful when all anyone on here has ever tried to do is help and support me. Sorry guys xx Embarassed . But I have just plucked up courage to look through the new threads...oh how much pleasure did I get from following little Emilys exploits! And the photos are so wonderful. I do hope she's eating better now by the way. Another reason for avoiding this site was that I suppose I felt I would be a bit of a fraud, lurking on here when I didn't even have a dog. Crying or Very sad
So life goes on, and I realise that I do need dogs in my life...whether they are mine or some body elses. As hubby and I are just not ready to think about having another, I guess I would like to get my 'fix' by sharing in some of the trials and tribulations of your little babies xx. I've no doubts that Gwyn and I will re home again one day, and we have been bitten by the shih tzu bug so maybe we will find another little shiddy...who knows? xx In the meantime I shall be following your little furbabies...please give them all a kiss and a hug from their Auntie Dawn xx
Thanks for being there, luv you lots xx
kisses

Aw Dawn it was so lovely to come on here and read your post. I am glad you are able to enjoy the little ones on here and it is a nice way to "share" our fur babies until the time is right for you to give another special little dog your love and care. Sophie and Simba will NEVER be forgotten - notonly are they in your hearts but in ours too and their stories will live on in the text of this website.

We may never have met BUT we are all one family here and we are good friends too. We are drawn together with the common, shared love of being dog lovers whatever the breed - we have all known the love of our dogs, we have all known the distress of caring for an ailing furbaby and the horror and misery of losing one - and all of us here are truly blessed because we have gone through these emotions. I pity the poor people who are not dog lovers and whe have NEVER known the love we have received from our lovely babies.

God bless Sophie and Simba who I believe are together, keeping each other company and watching over you waiting for that time when you will all be together again. And when the time comes fro you to have another little one whether it be shiddie or otherwise they would be so proud of you for the lovel you can give to another wee dog - and we will be here to share in your memories too xxx
