Shih Tzu and cat

Post by supernanauna on Fri Feb 18, 2011 4:58 pm

We've adopted a two and a half year old ST and he is making our resident cat's life a misery - every time she moves he keeps trying to pounce on her. She is now living upstairs, which is not fair on her. Is there anything I can do? If this keeps up one of them will have to go, which would break my heart.

Re: Shih Tzu and cat

We once had a cat who lived upstairs and our terrier lived downstairs. We moved to a bungalow and I re-homed the cat. She now has the best home ever (better than with us) and is spoiled rotten. I know it sounds harsh but I am essentially a dog (and equine) lover.

Sorry I can't help much as I don't have cats, but I know when Mali see's a cat she tries to chase it. I do think that you should give the them a bit more time to settle and hopefully they will learn to live with each other.I am sure that someone else on here may have cats and dogs who will give you more advice.
good luck

Give them a bit longer to get to know each other and things should settle down. Many moons ago we had a cat and a dog (the dog came first and the cat was a rescue cat), and what I used to do was have one room where the cat was never allowed in, and one where he dog wasn't allowed. That way each had a room they could go to if they wanted a break from the other.

As everyone has said - give it a bit more time! That is typical shih tzu behaviour to any animal newcomer its as if they dont want the poor thikngs to move! But they do stop it once the novelty wears off. Allow the cat to take refuge upstairs - it will give the cat time to adjust to the intruder - and have somewhere safe to retreat to. I thiknk you will find that when the dust settles the cat will rule the roost - they usually do lol!

Re: Shih Tzu and cat

I have 2 cats. One of the cats, Bootsie, has been around longer than the other cats or the 2 dogs and she lives upstairs in the "penthouse" as we call it. She's 13 years old so she's not too interested in bothering with the other cat or the dogs and the dogs have "learned" not to mess with Ms. Bootsie.

The other cat however, Mr. Max (he's about 3 years old now) runs around and plays with the dogs and actually lets them hang all over him. I guess it depends on the personality of the cat and dog if they get on or not.
