Me and my girl Holly Empty Me and my girl Holly

Post by anjgi Sat Nov 13, 2010 10:27 am

Hi and thank you for having me here.

This is my girl Holly - KC name Holly's Gem out of Chinese Pip and Charming Jasmin. If anyone recognises those names, I'd really like to meet Holly's breeder. I am her fourth owner and she's only 3. The breeder sold her on to a young woman who then passed her to her friend, who realised she couldn't cope with children and a demanding little princess so she advertised her for sale and I bought her.

Okay, the avator is Holly. I would upload another picture but having just gone through the upload thing, I don't know where or what has happened to it. Hopefully I'll work it out in time.
Anyway, Holly is, like I said, 3 years old. I've had her for six months. We've so far had three boughts of bad diarrhea, brought on, I think, by eating random stuff. She really is a scavenger! I have also found that she's allergic to grains - save for rice. She's on a homemade diet now, but I'm hoping to try and introduce her to Royal Canin Shih Tzu, which I am told is very good. I have James Wellbeloved here as a fall back if she doesn't get on with the RC.

The girl that I bought her off told me that Holly loved water and that if she saw a pond or stream she was straight in it. That's not my experience. She loves her baths but she doesn't head straight for the nearest pond when we're out. I'm left wondering about her previous owner for a number of reasons, but that's another story.

Holly is gold and white. She has a band of white around her neck, and white down her rear legs, her chest and a tip of white on her tail. Right now she's cut fairly short, save for her tail and her ears. She has the most beautiful chrysanthemum face! Not sure her coat is really a double coat. She seems to have fairly light fur save for down the middle of her back, where it definitely is a heavier coat. Before she was cut it was tending towards wavy in places. I have met a couple of other shih tzus with very thick dense coats, almost like shaggy sheep! But that's not Holly at all.

Holly comes to work with me. She sleeps under the desk all day. At lunchtime we go out for a walk in the park and she's made friends with other people in the building, who think it's strange but also kind of nice to be able to take your dog to work. They probably think I'm a nut case.

Holly is very stuborn at times. If she doesn't want to go in a certain direction she'll just dig in and nothing you can do moves her. She knows her own mind. She's more like a cat than a dog. She hardly ever comes when I call her, unless there is food involved. That said, she is very good. She never has an accident inside, even when she's poorly she's waiting there at the door to go out. She gets on really well with the cat (did I say I used to breed cream and bluecream persian cats? - Holly is like the dog version of a persian cat).

She loves everyone she meets, especially children. I have noticed though that she does prefer women to men. She gets grumpy if she's asleep and I try to wake her up - she growls. That said, she has the nicest nature you could wish for in a dog. She's very playful, loves her towel, which we have hanging on the back of a chair ready for a rub down when she comes in wet. She will now go a fetch her towel when she's been out. She has an old sock that's been stuffed with other old socks and she 'kills' it on a regular basis by shaking the bejesus out of it. She is obsessed with squirrels and would cheerfully chase them up trees given half a chance.

Well, that's all I can say for now. Thank you for having us here and hope to read some of your stories soon.

Hi Anjgi, Holly looks lovely and what a lucky girl to have found you. So many homes in such a short time! Sad

I am helping one of my customers to find a new home for her shih tzu, it will be her 3rd home and she just two. I wish I had the room to take her,but I am full with 4!

I think everyone should be allowed to take their dogs to work Very Happy

Welcome Anjgi & Holly, I think I have Holly's twin sister Tasha she fulfills all the characteristics you mention in Holly, does anything for food, very stuborn. Tasha also has a very thick coat. She loves people and children and is a little more than two years old. I also have another Shih Tzu Mali who is 3 1/2 years old and where Tasha is stocky and one big girl Mali is totally the opposite and very slim both have wonderful tempraments, but Tasha is the one that will always bark if someone comes near and yet of the two of them she is the quieter. I am glad Holly has settled down with you and looks like she has found her forever home at last.

I notice you're in West Wales. Holly's breeder was in Wales. I wish I could find her. Her name on Holly's KC certificate is Mrs. D.L.Thomas but I can't find her on the KC site.

Your two look so cute. Tasha, facially, looks quite like Holly!

If you find anything else to go on let me know and I will do my best to find her for you. Tasha was from North Wales and Mali was from near where we are, but neither was a Mrs DL Thomas. Do you have her pedigree if so there maybe some other names that I may recognise.

Hi Anjgi, lovely pics of Holly she is adorable!

I have recently noted on one of the websites that Royal Canin Shih Tzu has wheat gluten in it which is what I am using. Its a sound food but one of mine has allergies. So I am seeing if it is the food. teddy hug

I don't think that the UK version has wheat gluten in. The German Shepherd variety has wheat in it, but not the Shih Tzu. I may be wrong, but I did quite a bit of research. It seems that the US varieties have a different recipe to the UK. Worth checking. I looked on the Royal canin site and these are the UK ingredients: - rice, dehydrated poultry meat, animal fats, vegetable protein isolate, hydrolysed animal proteins, vegetable fibres, beet pulp, vegetable oils (soya and borage), fish oil, minerals, fructo-oligo-saccharides, DL-methionine, sodium polyphosphate, L-tyrosine, taurine, green tea and grape extracts (source of polyphenols), L-lysine, hydrolysed crustaceans (source of glucosamine), marigold extract (source of lutein), L-carnitine, hydrolysed cartilage (source of chondroitin).
None of that is wheat. I suppose it's just what suits each individual dog. thanks for the heads up though. I will go carefully. Going to discover dogs at earls court tomorrow. Will talk to anyone I see that has it in stock.

Hi there,
Holly is lovely. Beet pulp is not good for them and a lot of dogs are allergic to it. I use Green dog which is very good with nothing bad in it. No wheat or gluten. I also feed natures banquet nuggets.
My vet told me R C was not the best.

I feed my two girls Burns Mini Bites and Natures Menu Banquet Nuggets because it is natural food . Burns food is made close to where I live and they produce the ingredients on their farm so at least you know what goes into it.

I don't think the ingredients are that good in RC either. I looked at them at one time and was amazed that they can charge so much for it. Beet pulp is a cheap filler that is connected to allergies. If you go to this website there are reviews on most of the dry foods, http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/showproduct.php?product=1539&cat=all

For that kind of money you can buy orijen or Acana which are grain free and don't contain any cheap fillers.

Take a look

Hope you enjoy Discover Dogs!

Post by anjgi Sat Nov 13, 2010 9:11 pm

I followed that link. Interesting reading but again. not the UK ingredients, which are different to the US ingredients, probably due to laws that regulate what is and isn't in animal food in the UK. The list I posted is from the royal canin UK website and it's the ingredients for the UK variety of shih tzu food. It is interesting how much it differs to the US recipe.

Anyway, the vet recommended James Wellbeloved to me. I don't want to have to try loads of different foods on her. As long as I find one that suits her and that she enjoys all will be well. She came to me eating pedigree pouches, which made her poop three times a day. Now she's on chicken/fish and rice with veg (all homemade) she doesn't even poop once a day. This is worrying for me, but she seems quite happy.

I had a big lurcher for 15 years. (Greyhound/border collie) She died about 8 years ago now. She would eat anything and everything. Pooped like a mad thing everytime I took her out. Never had diarrhea, never had a single illness until she got to around 14, when she started having trouble with her legs. Wasn't spayed until she was 8 because you'd be hard pushed to tell she was on heat and it wasn't until I moved to London that I thought it might just become a problem, so I had her spayed. She lived with my persian cats and I always introduced her to the little tiny kittens immediately after they were born. She wasn't bothered about them at all, but a strange cat out on the street was fair game in her eyes. At the end of her life her legs finally went and she couldn't crouch to pee or poop anymore without falling over. I would carry her down the stairs with her crying because she had arthritis - I live on the first floor, so it was a bit of a job carrying a big lurcher down to the garden and back again several times a day. When it got so she refused to let me pick her up anymore, I had to put her in her bed and carry the bed down the stairs backwards, so she wouldn't jump or fall out. Eventually, neither of us could cope anymore and I had her put to sleep. Damn her but didn't she get up and walk around the vets as if nothing was the matter with her on that final morning! I knew though it was no good. She had no life anymore. She lived to run - and boy could she run when she was young! She was my beautiful Lucy and I will never forget her. Holly is a different kettle of fish, but she's my baby just like Lucy once was. Oh dear welling up now!

Yes but on your list of ingredients you said beet pulp.
The vets are often endorse foods doen't mean they are the best. One of our does Pedigree Chum and we all know that is not good.

I tend to agree what Michaela says about Vets endorsing foods. I have heard that Vet's when they are training to become a Vet spend about half a day on nutrition so I think they only endorse what they sell they don't always know which is best, every animal has different needs. When I first had Tasha at 15 weeks she was on Pedigree Complete as the breeder told us you can always get it everywhere at a garage etc if you run out.But what rubbish is in that.I am very lucky where we live that I have an animal feeds warehouse nearby and he knows a lot about feeding. I have also spoken to John Burns of Burns Pet who is a vet and developed the food because of the food that were being fed to the animals he saw in his practice. It is also based on a homemade diet which you said you are doing now. You can also speak to one of their Nutritionists on their freephone number. I have given you a link to their website below.

Thank you for that. I will check it out. I have started mixing in some james wellbeloved duck and rice kibble into her food. she likes it and it's got only natural and good things in it. If it doesn't upset her then hopefully we're sorted. Otherwise I can try the Burns. I still have a bag of Royal Canin coming to me by post (small bag) and I might try mixing it with the JW so as not to waste it. I'll let you know.

meanwhile, missy holly is sitting on the sofa, post morning walk and breakfast, eyeing up my pancakes. No Holly, you are not getting any!

I have no worries about beet pulp. it is contraindicated for horses and all references to it being bad as a food product relates to findings in horses. There have been no similar findings for dogs or cats. In other words, unless your dog or cat has a specific allergy to beet pulp, it is absolutely fine to feed them. I however, would not feed it to cats as they are true carnivores and can only digest meat. Cats cannot digest vegetable matter or cereals at all. I bred persians for a long time and believe me, it's pointless feeding cats vegetables of any kind. That's not to say they wont eat them, just that they wont get any good ness from them. Dogs though are omniverous, just like us. Dogs can also digest wheat, just like us, thought even amongst humans wheat gets a bad press these days. All a bit pointless unless you know there's a specfic allergy to wheat protein or gluten. At the end of the day, if the dog's eating and thriving then there's not much wrong is there?

Hi there and a very warm welcome. Sounds like your baby is a typical shih tzu both in temperament and in coat (they come in as many varieties of coat as we do in human hair Very Happy)

Just wanted to say that if she is eating only chicken/fish and rice and veg then there is not going to be too much poop - so don't worry about her not going every day as long as when she does go it is normal and she is not in any discomfort xxxx

Oh thank you for that because I was starting to worry. She's gone three days now without pooping, but I'm thinking that either late tonight or tomorrow morning... well I wait to see. I've started mixing in the JW with her meals so I'm hoping that will do the trick. She loves it!

I went to Discover Dogs at Earls Court on Sunday. Found the Shih Tzu's. Two beautiful dogs in full coat, very hot for them. I wanted to see if their coats were the same texture as Holly's and it seems they are. Very soft fur. There was a lovely old girl in the pen, all her coat trimmed off. Bless. the breed I also fell in love with is the Finnish Lapphund. Oh, such lovely dogs! If I lived in the countryside with a big house and garden, I'd definitely think about a Lapphund. Ah well, apartment life in the city. At least a Shih Tzu is the right size for small living.
