Poor Oscar in Hospital

Hi all just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience and offer any advice. Poor Oscar got a swipe from the cat yesterday, and him being a big cat managed to get poor Oscar right in the eye. It is punctured and he is in the theatre at the hospital as I type having it stitched. He was as brave as he coud be but he was clearly in pain. They are hoping that the cat hasn't scrathced the lens - they are 90% sure but said only time will tell. Has anyone else had similar thing happen? And any tips of stopping Oscar and Cat fighting, I love them both but it can't go on. I assume Oscar will stir clear of cat now, an expensive and painful lesson learnt.

Oh No! Poor Oscar. I havn't got any advice sorry but I'm sure he will have learnt to keep a respectfull distance from the cat now. Let us know how he is later

oh so sorry Tracy hope he is soon better,havent had this experience myself has dont have cats,but one of my sisters cats is seriously bad tempered and attacked T ia for nothing she just came in and went for Tia striaght for Tias face the only way I could stop the cat was to flip her with my foot,still I am sure Oscar will be ok give him a hug and lots of kisses from me xxx

Oh NO!! I hope he is alright - though I do know that shih tzu can cope with only one eye (or the sight in only one eye) but it is a very painful lesson for him and worrying and expensive for you. Sadly these things happen so quickly and I am afraid I don't have any advice regarding this other than if he has not learned his lesson then you need to try and keep them apart at least until he grows up and calms down a little.

How terrible for you and Oscar,. polase update us when you can. I don't have experience of cat's, but I do worry with Mali trying to play fight with Tasha that she may harm her eyes as she is having alot of trouble at the mo with her eyes.

Oh poor Oscar, no advice about cats sorry mine do try to chase them if they see one when they are out, but have never got close enough, I hope he gets better soon, let us know how he gets on x

Poor Oscar! I hate to hear of any injuries to our furbabies. I hope he recovers really quickly!

Unfortunately, I dislike cats as they are so unpredictable.

Hi all

Thanks for your lovely messages Oscar came home last night but this morning his eye isn't opening properly. He has 2 types of drops and an ointment/cream that have to go in 4 times a day -easier said than done with a 4.5 month old Shih Tzu. Going to call vet hospital again now which may result in a trip back. He has had to have his poor little eye shaved and is wearing an Elizabethan collar and a bobble in his fringe to keep his hair out of the way, he looks mortified! And worst of all he has to have pavement walks only , which he hates!

I am glad you have got poor Oscar home. What a traumatic experience for you all.
It would be worth a phone call to ask about his eye unwilling to open. I am having to put drops in Tasha's eyes for life now and it aint easy and she is 17months all though I just say to her 'eyes' lets do 'eyes and she just goes down then wriggles when you have to hold her eye's open to put the drops in so I do sympathise with you and Oscar. Keep us updated.Thinking of you Hun.

Glad Oscar is back home now, he should start to get better much more quickly now. Can't give any advice about putting the meds in, apart from wrapping him in a towel to stop any wriggling, maybe that would help. Poor thing having to wear the collar, there are alternatives available that some people use, and are less trouble, but not sure what they are called. Maybe someone else will know a bit later.

aww poor oscar!! im glad he is home now and having his treatment.

i have a big persian cat and she hates my 4 shih's. they all love her to bits but she doesnt feel the same and always goes for them.

she hasnt hurt any of them as of yet but does go quite mad with them. see the dogs like to sniff her and poke her with their noses to see if they can get a reaction out of her, and of course the do get one. but some times she will go for them for no reason and i have to tell her off. she even pushes the boys out of the way to get to their food which i find quite funny as she is the def the boss.

as far as i know when she swipes at them she doesnt have her claws out! coz its makes a slapping sound lol. they do not learn!!! well mine dont lol they will always go back for more! but maybe your little one will learn as he has gone threw horrible pain from it, lets hope he stays well away from the puss cat. or hopefully they will get used to each other as he is still only young.

Hello all

Well Oscar must be starting to feel a little bit better today as he has started stealing random odd items and taking them to his cage!! He also ran round the garden like a loon yesterday and ate some moss! He is supposed to be taking it easy and he has been, he won't play with any of his toys partly because of the silly collar but he is starting to get the cheeky twinkle back in his eyes which is such a relief as I thought he was going to be subdued and quiet forever! He is back at the hospital on Thurs for more photographs and a check up so I'm hoping the collar might be allowed to come off. On a positive he hasn't been to the loo in the night since he got home, I think he is too tired or maybe his bladder has just grown that little bit more! He is still chasing the cat but the clicker is proving a good distraction and the cat has stolen his bed that I have in the lounge!! Quite funny really, Jack (the cat) is cleary letting him know who is in charge, shame it had to come to blows but as Cat says about hopefully they will learn to live with each other. I will get a picture up as soon as I can figure out how to! Thanks again for all your kind words, much appreciated x
